Secondary memory was tested with the Immediate Word Recall test.
Firstly, ten common English words, appropriate for the age range of the participants, were drawn from the Paivio and al. list generator. Words were matched for linguistic familiarity, concreteness, and frequency and presented in sequence on a monitor for the participant to remember at the start of the test.
Then Immediate Word Recall started: the participant was allowed 60 seconds to write down as many of the retained words as possible. The task was scored for the number of correct answers, errors, and intrusions, and the resulting score was converted into a percentage.
